7The letters of this title total 52, a 7 — the number of analysis, secrecy, and the search for truth.
What it is
One-Punch Man began in 2009 as a webcomic that ONE drew and posted on his own website. It became a phenomenon online, and from 2012 it has been redrawn by Yūsuke Murata, the artist of Eyeshield 21, on Shueisha's web magazine Tonari no Young Jump. Saitama is a hero "for fun" who trained so hard he went bald, and now defeats every monster with one punch. Victory no longer excites him.
How it works
The joke turns the battle-manga formula inside out. Other series build towards the decisive blow; here the decisive blow is always one punch, so the suspense moves elsewhere: to everyone else's fights, to Saitama's struggle to be taken seriously, and to the bureaucracy of the Hero Association, which ranks heroes into classes no one recognises him for. His training regime, of 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats and a 10-kilometre run every day, is part of the parody.
Two versions
ONE's original is crudely drawn but tightly written. Murata's version follows the same story with spectacular, detailed fight scenes, and he often redraws and restructures chapters between their web publication and the collected volumes. The two coexist, and many readers follow both.
Why it matters
It is the most famous example of a web manga by an amateur becoming a major series, and its 2015 anime made Saitama a worldwide icon. It also showed how a collaboration between a writer and an artist could transform a story without changing it.
The title by its numbers
Set against the Pythagorean table, the title totals 52. Reduced, that is 7. The weight sits in “One-Punch”, which carries 42 on its own and reduces to 6.
The 7 governs analysis, secrecy, and the search for truth. The reference files it as an open question. It is a lens rather than a verdict, but it is a consistent one: the 7's pull toward the hidden and the unresolved is the pressure under this entry.
Beneath the 7 sit two smaller figures: 6 in the vowels, 1 in the consonants. Responsibility underneath, initiative on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
The letters give 7; the subject's own figures do not agree. 総画 strokes is 13, a 4 and debut year is 2012, a 5. Where the two part company the reference trusts the figures, because a title is a decision somebody made about the thing, and these are the thing.
The Inquiry asks one thing of everything on it: sit with the part that was never explained. The 7 mistakes withholding for depth. Some works filed here are obscure because they are unfinished, not because they are deep. The other entries that reduce to 7 are collected on The Inquiry.
