What it means
Web manga is manga whose first publication is online rather than in a printed magazine. It covers two quite different things: amateur work posted for free on personal websites and social media, and professional series serialised on publishers' web magazines and apps.
Amateur origins
The famous example is ONE's One-Punch Man, posted as a crudely drawn webcomic from 2009 and read by millions before any publisher was involved. Amateur web manga lets creators find an audience without winning a magazine competition or working as an assistant, and publishers now watch online platforms for new talent in the way they once watched doujinshi events.
Professional web magazines
Publishers launched their own online magazines and apps, such as Shogakukan's Ura Sunday and Shueisha's Shōnen Jump+, which serialise series alongside or instead of print. Many recent hits, including Spy × Family and Chainsaw Man's second part, ran online first.
How it differs from webtoon
Web manga usually keeps the page layout of printed manga, read right to left, so it can be collected in volumes unchanged. Webtoons, from Korea, are designed as a single vertical scroll for phones. The two meet in apps that publish both.
The term by its numbers
Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 30, which folds down to 3. The weight sits in “manga”, which carries 18 on its own and reduces to 9.
What the 3 brings is expression. The reference files it as an act of telling. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 3's instinct to turn everything into a story worth telling.
The vowels alone reduce to 7, the consonants to 5. Inquiry underneath, change on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
The 3 asks you to watch the technique rather than the plot it is carrying. The 3 talks past the point. Where an entry here runs long, it is usually because the technique was more fun to describe than it was important. The other entries that reduce to 3 are collected on The Telling.
