ONE
7The Inquiry · 16ONE
Born 1986
The self-taught creator of One-Punch Man and Mob Psycho 100, who became a star by posting crudely drawn webcomics online.
7Reduced, this name gives 7. It sits on The Inquiry with the rest of an open question.
Career
ONE was born in 1986. He had no formal training and drew in an extremely simple style. In 2009 he began posting One-Punch Man as a webcomic on his own website, where it gained millions of readers. Shogakukan then gave him a series, Mob Psycho 100, on its web manga site Ura Sunday.
The work
One-Punch Man was redrawn from 2012 by Yūsuke Murata for Shueisha, while ONE continued his own version. Mob Psycho 100 (2012–2017) appeared in his own art. Both are about extraordinary power and the ordinary people who carry it.
The style
His drawing is rough, sometimes almost a sketch, but his storytelling is precise: strong pacing, sharp comic timing and a habit of undercutting the expected climax. His stories repeatedly argue that strength is not the same as worth.
Why he matters
He is the most famous example of a web manga artist becoming a major creator without the traditional route of magazine competitions and assistant work. His success helped publishers take amateur online manga seriously as a source of new talent.
The name by its numbers
Set against the Pythagorean table, the name totals 16. Reduced, that is 7.
The 7 governs analysis, secrecy, and the search for truth. The reference files it as an open question. It is a lens rather than a verdict, but it is a consistent one: the 7's pull toward the hidden and the unresolved is the pressure under this entry.
Beneath the 7 sit two smaller figures: 11 in the vowels, 5 in the consonants. Vision underneath, change on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
The letters give 7; the subject's own figures do not agree. Born is 1986, a 6. Where the two part company the reference trusts the figures, because the romanisation is a convenience for readers abroad, while the strokes are what the pen name was actually built from.
The Inquiry asks one thing of everything on it: sit with the part that was never explained. The 7 mistakes withholding for depth. Some works filed here are obscure because they are unfinished, not because they are deep. The other entries that reduce to 7 are collected on The Inquiry.
