3The letters of this title total 57, a 3 — the number of communication, creativity, and the public stage.
What it is
Lone Wolf and Cub, written by Kazuo Koike and drawn by Goseki Kojima, ran in Futabasha's Weekly Manga Action from 1970 to 1976 and was collected in 28 volumes. Ogami Ittō was the shogun's official executioner until the scheming Yagyū clan murdered his wife and framed him for treason. Refusing to die, he takes his infant son Daigorō on the road to seek revenge, earning money as an assassin.
How it works
Most stories are self-contained episodes in which a client hires Ittō for a killing, which usually reveals something about the samurai code, the cruelty of the period or the lives of ordinary people. Daigorō rides in a wooden baby cart concealing blades and guns. Over the whole series runs the war between Ittō and the Yagyū, building to a final confrontation.
The art
Kojima's brushwork is restrained and cinematic, with long, nearly silent sequences of landscape, walking and sudden violence. Koike's scripts are full of historical detail about Edo-period customs, law and swordsmanship, and they give Daigorō's silent watching as much weight as his father's battles.
Why it matters
It is a masterpiece of gekiga and of samurai fiction. It was adapted into six films in the 1970s, which were later cut together abroad as Shogun Assassin, and its English edition in the 1980s, with covers by Frank Miller, introduced many American comics readers to manga. Its influence can be seen in later Western stories of a killer travelling with a child.
The title by its numbers
Set against the Pythagorean table, the title totals 57. Reduced, that is 3. The weight sits in “Wolf”, which carries 20 on its own and reduces to 2.
The 3 governs communication, creativity, and the public stage. The reference files it as an act of telling. It is a lens rather than a verdict, but it is a consistent one: the 3's instinct to turn everything into a story worth telling is the pressure under this entry.
Beneath the 3 sit two smaller figures: 3 in the vowels, 9 in the consonants. The presentation folds back into the want: reckoning in service of expression.
Counted another way the answer changes. 総画 strokes is 25, a 7, volumes is 28, a 1, years serialised is 7 and debut year is 1970, an 8. The title says 3; the subject says otherwise, and the subject is the harder evidence.
The Telling asks one thing of everything on it: watch the technique rather than the plot it is carrying. The 3 talks past the point. Where an entry here runs long, it is usually because the technique was more fun to describe than it was important. The other entries that reduce to 3 are collected on The Telling.
