33Thirty-three — service. That is the reduction of this title, and the shelf it is read from.
What it is
Sanpei Shirato's Kamui Den ran from 1964 to 1971 in Garo, a monthly magazine founded largely to publish it, with a second part following in the 1980s and 1990s. Set in the Edo period, it follows three young men from different classes: Kamui, born into the lowest caste of outcasts, who becomes a ninja to escape it; Shōsuke, a peasant who leads his village against oppression; and Ryūnosuke, a samurai whose family is destroyed by intrigue.
How it works
The story is an epic of the feudal system seen from below. It shows famine, taxation, uprisings, discrimination against outcasts and the violence of those in power, and it follows how the three men's lives cross. Much of it is about economics and class: how rice is grown, how it is taxed, and who suffers.
The politics
Shirato, the son of a left-wing painter, wrote Kamui Den as a Marxist history, and it was read eagerly by the student radicals of the 1960s. Its seriousness about history and society helped show that manga could be political literature.
Why it matters
It made Garo the home of alternative manga, which went on to publish artists such as Yoshiharu Tsuge, and it is one of the landmarks of gekiga. A separate, more action-centred story about Kamui, Kamui Gaiden, was adapted as an anime and as a live-action film.
The title by its numbers
Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 33 on the nose, with no reduction to do. The weight sits in “Kamui”, which carries 19 on its own and reduces to 1.
What the 33 brings is service. The reference files it as a transmission. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 33's devotion to lifting up everyone it touches.
The vowels alone reduce to 9, the consonants to 6. Reckoning underneath, responsibility on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Counted another way the answer changes. 総画 strokes is 12, a 3, years serialised is 8 and debut year is 1964, a 2. The title says 33; the subject says otherwise, and the subject is the harder evidence.
The 33 asks you to trace who learned from this and what they did with it. The 33 gives itself away entirely. The teachers here are frequently better remembered than read. The other entries that reduce to 33 are collected on The Teaching.
