Goseki Kojima

8The Ledger · 53

小島 剛夕

Born 1928

The artist of Lone Wolf and Cub, whose restrained brushwork set a standard for historical gekiga.

8Reduced, this name gives 8. It sits on The Ledger with the rest of a reckoning.

Career

Goseki Kojima was born in 1928. He began as a painter of kamishibai, the paper theatre performed on street corners, and then drew for the rental-book manga market of the 1950s, specialising in historical stories.

The work

He drew Lone Wolf and Cub (1970–1976), written by Kazuo Koike, and worked with Koike on several other series. He also drew his own historical manga.

The style

Kojima's art is controlled and atmospheric. He drew landscapes, weather and silence with care, and staged violence in sudden, brief bursts. His figures move with the weight of real bodies, and his period detail is exact.

Why he matters

His work on Lone Wolf and Cub is a model of cinematic manga and of historical drawing. He died in 2000.

The name by its numbers

人格 core20 → 2総格 total26 → 8born1928 → 2

Set against the Pythagorean table, the name totals 53. Reduced, that is 8. The weight sits in “Goseki”, which carries 30 on its own and reduces to 3.

The 8 governs money, authority, and the machinery of ambition. The reference files it as a reckoning. It is a lens rather than a verdict, but it is a consistent one: the 8's concern with power, money, and who is really in charge is the pressure under this entry.

Beneath the 8 sit two smaller figures: 9 in the vowels, 8 in the consonants. Reckoning underneath, power on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.

人格 core is 20, a 2, 総格 total is 26, an 8 and born is 1928, a 2. That the 8 turns up in 総格 total as well as in the letters is the sort of coincidence this reference collects rather than explains.

The Ledger asks one thing of everything on it: follow the money before you judge the decision. The 8 measures what is countable and calls the rest noise. Several entries record industries that optimised themselves into exhaustion. The other entries that reduce to 8 are collected on The Ledger.
