"Dramatic pictures": the realist, adult-oriented comics movement that broke away from children's manga in the late 1950s. Filed under 4, the structure.
4Reduced, this term gives 4. It sits on The Structure with the rest of a structure.
Gekiga (劇画) was coined in 1957 by Yoshihiro Tatsumi to name what he and his peers were drawing: long, serious stories for readers who had outgrown the comic strips and children's adventures that the word "manga" then implied.
The movement grew in the rental-book market, where comics were borrowed from lending libraries rather than bought. Working outside the magazine system gave artists room for crime, poverty and violence, drawn with cinematic framing and a grittier line. In 1959 Tatsumi and others, including Takao Saitō, formed the Gekiga Kōbō collective to promote the approach.
Gekiga proved there was an adult audience for comics. When the rental market declined in the 1960s its artists moved into new magazines aimed at older readers, and the seinen demographic grew directly out of that migration.
The label is now used loosely for any hard-edged, realistically drawn manga, but historically it names a specific break: the moment Japanese comics claimed the right to grow up with their readers.
Set against the Pythagorean table, the term totals 31. Reduced, that is 4.
The reference files it as a structure. The number's contribution is structure, labour, and the building of lasting systems — and with it the 4's insistence that what lasts must be built patiently, which is the thread the reference follows here.
Beneath the 4 sit two smaller figures: 6 in the vowels, 7 in the consonants. Responsibility underneath, inquiry on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Read on the 4's terms, this entry asks you to look for the constraint the subject was working inside. The 4 confuses the frame for the work. Structures outlive their usefulness, and several entries here describe conventions kept long past their reason. The other entries that reduce to 4 are collected on The Structure.
