Essay manga
33The Teaching · 33Also written: autobiographical manga, comic essay
Non-fiction manga in which the author draws their own life, experiences or interests.
33Reduced, this term gives 33. It sits on The Teaching with the rest of a transmission.
What it means
Essay manga, or comic essays, are non-fiction manga in which an author draws their own life: childhood, work, illness, travel, cooking, parenting or a hobby. They are often humorous and conversational, like a written essay.
The range
Many are light and practical, about living abroad, raising a cat or learning a skill. Others are serious memoirs. Yoshihiro Tatsumi's A Drifting Life tells his career in early gekiga. Many artists have drawn their experiences of illness, depression or caring for parents.
Fiction from life
Some fiction is close to essay. Momoko Sakura's Chibi Maruko-chan turns her own childhood and family into comedy, and many manga artists draw stories about their apprenticeships and editors.
Why it matters
Essay manga are a large and popular part of Japanese publishing, especially for adult women readers. They show how naturally the medium is used in Japan to share personal experience, and many have found readers abroad.
The term by its numbers
Counted letter by letter this term comes to 33 and stops there — the sum is already the number. The weight sits in “manga”, which carries 18 on its own and reduces to 9.
The reference files it as a transmission. The number's contribution is healing, teaching, and devotion to others — and with it the 33's devotion to lifting up everyone it touches, which is the thread the reference follows here.
Split the term again and the vowels give a Heart's Desire of 8 (power) against a Personality of 7 (inquiry) in the consonants — power underneath, inquiry on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Read on the 33's terms, this entry asks you to trace who learned from this and what they did with it. The 33 gives itself away entirely. The teachers here are frequently better remembered than read. The other entries that reduce to 33 are collected on The Teaching.
