Yūrei

33The Teaching · 33

Also written: yurei, ghost, Japanese ghost

Japanese ghosts: the spirits of the dead, traditionally pale, long-haired and dressed in white.

33Term sums to 33 with nothing to reduce — The Teaching, where the reference files a transmission.

What it means

Yūrei are the ghosts of Japanese tradition: the spirits of people who have died but cannot rest, often because of a violent death, unfinished business or a strong emotion such as love or revenge. They are distinct from yōkai, the wider category of supernatural creatures.

How they look

The classic yūrei, established in Edo-period theatre and painting, has long black hair, a white burial kimono, pale skin and, often, no feet. This image remains powerful, and is behind modern horror figures such as Sadako in Ring.

In manga

Ghosts appear in every genre. In Shaman King, the ghost of a samurai becomes the hero's partner in battle. Horror manga use yūrei for fear, and comedies and romances give them friendly or tragic roles. Shigeru Mizuki's work is full of both yūrei and yōkai.

Why it matters

Yūrei express Japanese ideas about death, memory and obligation to the dead. Their image has spread worldwide through Japanese horror films and manga.

The term by its numbers

Yūrei33total33

Counted letter by letter this term comes to 33 and stops there — the sum is already the number.

The reference files it as a transmission. The number's contribution is healing, teaching, and devotion to others — and with it the 33's devotion to lifting up everyone it touches, which is the thread the reference follows here.

Split the term again and the vowels give a Heart's Desire of 8 (power) against a Personality of 7 (inquiry) in the consonants — power underneath, inquiry on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.

Read on the 33's terms, this entry asks you to trace who learned from this and what they did with it. The 33 gives itself away entirely. The teachers here are frequently better remembered than read. The other entries that reduce to 33 are collected on The Teaching.
