7Title sums to 43 and reduces to 7 — The Inquiry, where the reference files an open question.
What it is
Hiroyuki Takei's Shaman King ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1998 to 2004 and was collected in 32 volumes. Yoh Asakura is a relaxed, easygoing boy from a family of shamans, people who can see and communicate with spirits. He moves to Tokyo with the ghost of a samurai who died six hundred years earlier, Amidamaru, who becomes his partner in battle.
How it works
Every five hundred years, shamans from around the world fight in the Shaman Fight to decide who will become the Shaman King, able to reshape the world. Shamans fight by merging with their spirits, and each has a distinct style drawn from a different culture or religion. Yoh's strict fiancée, Anna, trains him, and he gathers friends from around the world, while his twin brother Hao threatens to win and destroy humanity.
Its ending
The original serialisation ended abruptly in 2004. Takei finished the story in a complete edition published in 2008 and 2009, adding the final chapters he had planned, and later wrote sequels.
Why it matters
It was one of Jump's major hits around 2000, and its anime, from 2001, and a remake in 2021 brought it to audiences worldwide. Its idea of fighting through partnerships with spirits, and its celebration of many cultures, are its lasting signatures.
The title by its numbers
Counted letter by letter this title comes to 43 — 7 once reduced. The weight sits in “King”, which carries 23 on its own and reduces to 5.
The reference files it as an open question. The number's contribution is analysis, secrecy, and the search for truth — and with it the 7's pull toward the hidden and the unresolved, which is the thread the reference follows here.
Split the title again and the vowels give a Heart's Desire of 11 (vision) against a Personality of 5 (change) in the consonants — vision underneath, change on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Counted another way the answer holds. 総画 strokes is 19, a 1, volumes is 32, a 5, years serialised is 7 and debut year is 1998, a 9, and years serialised reduces to the same 7. Two systems, one figure.
Read on the 7's terms, this entry asks you to sit with the part that was never explained. The 7 mistakes withholding for depth. Some works filed here are obscure because they are unfinished, not because they are deep. The other entries that reduce to 7 are collected on The Inquiry.
