Occult manga

What it means

Occult manga deal with the supernatural and the paranormal: ghosts, curses, psychic powers, spirit mediums, UFOs and urban legends. They range from serious horror to comedy, and often mix the two.

A long tradition

Japanese folklore is full of yōkai and ghosts, and Shigeru Mizuki's GeGeGe no Kitarō brought them into manga. The occult boom of the 1970s, with its fascination with psychics, prophecies and UFOs, added new material, and urban legends spread by schoolchildren, such as the slit-mouthed woman, supplied more.

Recent examples

Mob Psycho 100 follows a powerful psychic boy and his fraudulent mentor. Dandadan combines ghosts and aliens, battles and romance, drawing on urban legends and UFO lore.

Why it matters

Occult manga let artists draw strange creatures and play with the line between belief and scepticism. Their popularity reflects a lasting fascination with the hidden and the unexplained.

The term by its numbers

Occult20manga18total38 → 11

Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 38, which folds down to 11. The weight sits in “Occult”, which carries 20 on its own and reduces to 2.

Eleven is visionary (master 11) — inspiration, tension, and heightened awareness. The reference files it as a signal received early. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 11's heightened, high-voltage intuition about what comes next.

The vowels alone reduce to 11, the consonants to 9. Vision underneath, reckoning on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.

The 11 is unstable and knows it. Being early and being wrong are indistinguishable until later. What the 11 still asks is that you remember that nobody noticed this at the time. The other entries that reduce to 11 are collected on The Signal.
