Also written: vertical scroll comic
A digital comic designed to be read by scrolling down a single long vertical strip, usually in full colour. 31 in the letters, reducing to 4.
4Reduced, this term gives 4. It sits on The Structure with the rest of a structure.
A webtoon is a comic made for the screen rather than the page. Instead of panels arranged on a spread, it runs as one continuous column that the reader scrolls through, one episode at a time.
The format took shape in South Korea in the early 2000s, when portals such as Daum and Naver began hosting comics for free online. Designed first for desktop browsers and then for phones, it became the dominant form of Korean comics and spread to China, Japan and the English-speaking market.
Without a page to organise, pacing is controlled by vertical space: a long empty stretch between panels is a pause, and a reveal is placed just below the edge of the screen so the reader scrolls into it. Most webtoons are in full colour and released weekly in short episodes.
The two words overlap but are not the same. Manhwa is any Korean comic; webtoon names the vertical digital format, which Korean creators dominate but which is now used everywhere. When a webtoon is printed, its panels have to be rearranged onto pages.
Counted letter by letter this term comes to 31 — 4 once reduced.
The reference files it as a structure. The number's contribution is structure, labour, and the building of lasting systems — and with it the 4's insistence that what lasts must be built patiently, which is the thread the reference follows here.
Split the term again and the vowels give a Heart's Desire of 8 (power) against a Personality of 5 (change) in the consonants — power underneath, change on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Read on the 4's terms, this entry asks you to look for the constraint the subject was working inside. The 4 confuses the frame for the work. Structures outlive their usefulness, and several entries here describe conventions kept long past their reason. The other entries that reduce to 4 are collected on The Structure.
