What it is

Yukinobu Tatsu's Dandadan has run on Shueisha's Shōnen Jump+ since 2021. Momo Ayase, a high-school girl from a family of spirit mediums, believes in ghosts but not aliens. Ken Takakura, a nerdy boy she nicknames Okarun, believes in aliens but not ghosts. To settle the argument, she visits a site haunted by UFOs, and he visits a haunted tunnel. Both are right.

How it works

Momo is abducted by aliens and discovers psychic powers; Okarun is possessed by a malevolent spirit, the Turbo Granny, who steals his most precious possession. The two must work together to recover it, and the series becomes a breakneck mixture of ghost story, alien invasion, martial arts and romantic comedy, with new monsters drawn from Japanese urban legends and UFO lore.

The style

Tatsu, who previously worked as an assistant to Tatsuki Fujimoto, draws dense, kinetic action and grotesque creatures, and switches abruptly between gross-out comedy, horror and sincere emotion. Many readers come for the fights and stay for Momo and Okarun's awkward romance.

Why it matters

It became one of the flagship series of Jump+, showing how far web serialisation now shapes mainstream manga. Its 2024 anime by Science SARU was a major international success.
