7The letters of this title total 43, a 7 — the number of analysis, secrecy, and the search for truth.

What it is

Oshi no Ko, written by Aka Akasaka and drawn by Mengo Yokoyari, ran in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump from 2020 to 2024 and was collected in 16 volumes. Gorō Amamiya, a rural doctor, is a devoted fan of the teenage idol Ai Hoshino. When she secretly comes to his hospital to give birth to twins, he is murdered by a stalker, and wakes up reborn as one of her children, Aquamarine, with his memories intact. His twin sister Ruby, he later learns, is also reborn.

How it works

Ai is murdered while the twins are still small. Aqua grows up determined to find the man who arranged it, and enters the entertainment world to do so: acting, reality television and stage plays. Ruby pursues her mother's dream of becoming an idol. The revenge plot runs through a detailed, often critical portrait of how the Japanese entertainment industry works.

The industry

Akasaka uses each arc to show a different part of the business: a reality show that drives a performer to despair, a manga adaptation whose author and screenwriter clash, the training and exploitation of idols. The series became known for treating these topics seriously, and its title refers to an oshi, the performer a fan supports above all others.

Why it matters

Its 2023 anime by Doga Kobo was a huge hit, and its opening song, "Idol" by YOASOBI, topped international charts. Its mixture of reincarnation, mystery and showbusiness drama made it one of the most discussed manga of its time.

The title by its numbers

Set against the Pythagorean table, the title totals 43. Reduced, that is 7. The weight sits in “Oshi”, which carries 24 on its own and reduces to 6.

The reference files it as an open question. The number's contribution is analysis, secrecy, and the search for truth — and with it the 7's pull toward the hidden and the unresolved, which is the thread the reference follows here.

Beneath the 7 sit two smaller figures: 9 in the vowels, 7 in the consonants. Reckoning underneath, inquiry on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.

It does not rest on the letters alone. 総画 strokes is 16, a 7, volumes is 16, a 7, years serialised is 5 and debut year is 2020, a 4 — and the 7 arrives there too, by a route that owes nothing to the alphabet. A title can be translated; 総画 strokes and volumes cannot.

Read on the 7's terms, this entry asks you to sit with the part that was never explained. The 7 mistakes withholding for depth. Some works filed here are obscure because they are unfinished, not because they are deep. The other entries that reduce to 7 are collected on The Inquiry.
