What it is
Kei Sanbe's Erased, whose Japanese title means "the town where only I am missing", ran in Kadokawa's Young Ace from 2012 to 2016. Satoru Fujinuma is a 29-year-old manga artist who delivers pizzas to make ends meet. He has a strange ability he calls Revival: when something terrible is about to happen, he is sent back a few minutes in time and can prevent it.
How it works
When his mother is murdered and he is blamed, Revival throws Satoru back eighteen years, to 1988, into his eleven-year-old body in a snowy town in Hokkaido. That winter, a classmate, Kayo Hinazuki, was abducted and killed, the first of a series of murders. Satoru realises that if he can save her, he may change everything that followed.
The heart
The mystery of the killer drives the plot, but the most moving parts are about Kayo, who is abused by her mother, and Satoru's efforts as a child, with an adult's mind, to protect her and befriend her. The series treats child abuse and loneliness with seriousness.
Why it matters
It was a major success, adapted as an anime and a live-action film in 2016 and as a Netflix series in 2017. Its combination of time travel, mystery and emotional drama made it one of the most discussed thrillers of its time.
