What it is

The Apothecary Diaries began as Natsu Hyūga's web novel and has been adapted into two concurrent manga versions. The one drawn by Nekokurage has run in Monthly Big Gangan since 2017 and is the more widely translated. Maomao, an apothecary from the pleasure district, is kidnapped and sold as a servant into the emperor's rear palace, where she cannot stop herself from diagnosing things.

How it works

It is a procedural. Most chapters present a problem — an illness, a poisoning, an inexplicable death, a rumour — and Maomao resolves it through pharmacology and observation. The solutions are usually material: lead in cosmetics, mercury, a misidentified plant, a dietary deficiency. The series is genuinely interested in the chemistry and takes time to explain it.

Around the cases runs a slower political plot about succession, and the two layers intersect more often as the series goes on.

The setting

The court is a fictionalised imperial China rather than a historical one. The rear palace — thousands of consorts and servants in an enclosed hierarchy — functions as a closed-room setting where information is currency and nobody can leave. That constraint is what makes the mysteries work.

What it is about

Maomao is a rare protagonist: openly uninterested in romance, motivated primarily by curiosity, and inclined to test poisons on herself. Her refusal to be elevated is the running joke and also the argument — the series is about a woman with expertise navigating a system that only values her as an ornament, and it lets her win by being useful in ways the system cannot classify.

Which version to read

The Nekokurage adaptation is more atmospheric and better paced. A second manga adaptation drawn by Minoji Kurata exists and is closer to the novel's detail. The light novels are the original and go further than either.
