Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys ran from 1999 to 2006. Kenji, a convenience store manager and failed musician, discovers that a spreading cult led by a masked figure is following a plan he and his friends wrote in a childhood notebook.
The series moves constantly between the friends' 1970s childhood and the present, and the two timelines interpret each other. A detail treated as trivial in a childhood scene becomes catastrophic in the present, and much of the tension comes from the characters' failure to remember something the reader suspects matters.
Urasawa handles a very large cast across decades, and the plotting is intricate enough that readers routinely take notes.
The real subject is the gap between who people intended to become and who they are. The protagonists are men in middle age confronting the fact that their childhood imaginations had consequences, and that the world they inherited was partly built by their own inattention.
The cult material is also a fairly direct engagement with how ordinary people are recruited into destructive movements, and it declines to make the process mysterious.
The ending is widely considered weaker than the extraordinary build-up, and this is the most common criticism of the series. Whether it lands is genuinely debated. The journey is generally agreed to justify the destination regardless.
