Created by
4A 4 by its title: builder & organizer, and therefore the structure.
What it is
Akane Shimizu's Cells at Work! ran in Kodansha's Monthly Shōnen Sirius from 2015 to 2021 and was collected in 6 volumes. Inside a human body, the cells are workers in a busy city. A clumsy red blood cell, numbered AE3803, keeps getting lost while delivering oxygen, and a white blood cell, U-1146, keeps rescuing her from invading bacteria.
How it works
Each chapter is about a real process in the body: a cut, a cold, an allergy, heatstroke, a vaccine, cancer. The cells are characters with jobs, so platelets are small children who seal wounds, killer T cells are tough soldiers and macrophages are elegant ladies who are also ferocious fighters. Captions explain the real biology behind each scene.
Why it works
The series is funny and exciting, but it is also accurate enough that teachers and doctors have recommended it. It turns the abstractions of biology into a story with characters, and its explanations stay with readers because they are attached to a scene.
Why it matters
It is one of the most successful educational manga of recent years. Its 2018 anime, a live-action film (2024) and many spin-offs, including the darker Cells at Work! Code Black, about the body of an unhealthy adult, have spread it widely.
The title by its numbers
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 40 across 3 words, reducing to 4. The weight sits in “Work!”, which carries 22 on its own and reduces to 22.
Four is builder & organizer — structure, labour, and the building of lasting systems. The reference files it as a structure. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 4's insistence that what lasts must be built patiently.
Heart's Desire 3, Personality 1: expression underneath, initiative on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Counted another way the answer changes. 総画 strokes is 30, a 3, volumes is 6, years serialised is 7 and debut year is 2015, an 8. The title says 4; the subject says otherwise, and the subject is the harder evidence.
The 4 confuses the frame for the work. Structures outlive their usefulness, and several entries here describe conventions kept long past their reason. What the 4 still asks is that you look for the constraint the subject was working inside. The other entries that reduce to 4 are collected on The Structure.
