"Pilgrimage to sacred places": fans travelling to the real locations that appear in manga and anime.

4Four — foundation. That is the reduction of this term, and the shelf it is read from.

What it means

Seichi junrei, "pilgrimage to sacred places", is the fans' term for travelling to real locations shown in manga and anime: a town, a station, a shrine, a crossing or a mountain view. The word borrows from religious pilgrimage, with affectionate humour.

How it works

Fans identify locations from the backgrounds, visit them, and often recreate shots from the work with photographs. Many towns now welcome them with maps, signs, stamps and events. Some put up statues of characters.

Examples

Visitors to the area around Mount Fuji follow the campsites of Laid-Back Camp. A railway crossing in Kamakura is famous among fans of Slam Dunk. Gosho Aoyama's home town in Tottori has become a Detective Conan town, and Sakaiminato's street of yōkai statues celebrates Shigeru Mizuki.

Why it matters

Seichi junrei has become an important part of local tourism in Japan, bringing visitors to small towns that appear in popular works. It also shows how closely manga and anime are tied to real places.

The term by its numbers

The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 67 across 2 words, reducing to 4. The weight sits in “Seichi”, which carries 35 on its own and reduces to 8.

Four is builder & organizer — structure, labour, and the building of lasting systems. The reference files it as a structure. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 4's insistence that what lasts must be built patiently.

Heart's Desire 4, Personality 9: the presentation folds back into the want: reckoning in service of foundation.

The 4 confuses the frame for the work. Structures outlive their usefulness, and several entries here describe conventions kept long past their reason. What the 4 still asks is that you look for the constraint the subject was working inside. The other entries that reduce to 4 are collected on The Structure.
