What it is

Afro's Laid-Back Camp has run in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara Forward since 2015. Rin Shima is a quiet high-school girl in Yamanashi Prefecture who loves to camp alone, especially in the off-season when campsites are empty. At a lakeside campsite she meets Nadeshiko Kagamihara, an energetic girl who has just moved to the area and has fallen asleep on the way to see Mount Fuji.

How it works

Nadeshiko joins her school's tiny Outdoor Activities Club and gradually draws Rin into group trips, although Rin still values her solo camps. Each chapter covers a trip: choosing a site, setting up a tent, cooking, keeping warm, and looking at the view. There is almost no conflict, and the pleasure lies in the details and the company.

The practical side

The series is full of real information, about equipment, campsite booking, cooking on a burner and staying warm in winter, and its locations are real places around Mount Fuji and the Fuji Five Lakes. Readers learn how to camp while watching the characters do it.

Why it matters

Its 2018 anime was widely credited with a boom in camping among young people in Japan and with drawing visitors to the locations it shows. It is one of the best examples of a manga that makes a hobby irresistible, and of the gentle, comforting slice-of-life that Kirara magazines publish.
