What it is

Gosho Aoyama's Detective Conan has run in Weekly Shōnen Sunday since 1994, and passed 100 collected volumes in 2021. Shinichi Kudō, a high-school student famous as a detective, witnesses a shady deal by men in black. They force a poison on him, but instead of killing him it shrinks him into the body of a small child. Hiding his identity, he calls himself Conan Edogawa, after Arthur Conan Doyle and the Japanese mystery writer Edogawa Ranpo, and moves in with his childhood friend Ran and her father, a hapless private detective.

How it works

Most stories are self-contained murder cases, set out with clues the reader can follow. Conan solves them, then uses gadgets made by his neighbour, Professor Agasa, to reveal the answer: a bow tie that changes his voice and a wristwatch that fires tranquilliser darts, so that he can put Ran's sleeping father in a chair and speak for him. Between cases, a longer story follows the Black Organisation behind the poison.

Its shape

The series has run for decades while its story time has barely moved, so Conan has been a child at school for well over a thousand chapters. That is part of the appeal: readers know what each case will look like, and the pleasure is in the puzzle. Characters from Aoyama's earlier Magic Kaito, including the gentleman thief Kaitō Kid, appear as recurring rivals.

Why it matters

It is one of the best-selling manga ever and the most successful mystery manga by far. Its anime has aired since 1996, and its annual films, released every spring since 1997, are among the biggest box-office events in Japan. Aoyama's home town in Tottori Prefecture has turned itself into a Conan town, and the prefecture's airport is named after him.

The title by its numbers

Detective39Conan20total59 → 5
総画 strokes34 → 7debut year1994 → 5

The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 59 across 2 words, reducing to 5. The weight sits in “Detective”, which carries 39 on its own and reduces to 3.

Five is freedom seeker — freedom, disruption, and restless movement. The reference files it as a turn. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 5's restlessness and hunger for change.

Heart's Desire 4, Personality 1: foundation underneath, initiative on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.

Counted another way the answer holds. 総画 strokes is 34, a 7 and debut year is 1994, a 5, and debut year reduces to the same 5. Two systems, one figure.

The 5 moves for the sake of moving. Not every break documented here led anywhere, and the reference says so where it did not. What the 5 still asks is that you ask what was abandoned, and whether it deserved to be. The other entries that reduce to 5 are collected on The Turn.
