What it means

Romance manga takes a developing relationship as its central concern. It is one of the largest categories in the medium and appears across all four demographics, which is precisely why the label alone tells you little.

How the demographics differ

• Shojo — first love, school settings, emotional interiority rendered through layout and tone. The reader is usually positioned close to one character's feelings.
• Josei — adult relationships with adult complications: work, money, past partners, marriage. Endings are frequently unresolved or ambivalent.
• Shonen — romantic comedy is a substantial tradition, often built on misunderstanding and delay, and typically ensemble rather than intimate.
