What it means
Tsundere combines two Japanese sound-symbolic words: one for turning away sharply, and one for being lovestruck or affectionate. The character alternates between the two registers, usually toward one specific person.
The two common variants
The distinction matters more than the label suggests. In one version the coldness is a genuine defence that erodes as trust develops, and the warmth beneath was always real. In the other, the character simply behaves harshly in public and affectionately in private, with no development involved.
