7Title sums to 43 and reduces to 7 — The Inquiry, where the reference files an open question.
Natsuki Takaya's Fruits Basket ran from 1998 to 2006 in the shojo magazine Hana to Yume. Tohru Honda, recently orphaned and living in a tent, is taken in by the Sohma family, whose members transform into zodiac animals when embraced by the opposite sex.
The premise reads as light romantic comedy and the series is not that. Its real subject is family abuse — how it is transmitted, how it is rationalised by those inside it, and how difficult it is to leave a structure that also provides belonging.
The curse functions as a fairly direct metaphor for inherited obligation, and the family's controlling head is written without softening.
The cast is enormous and genuinely individuated. Takaya gives a very large ensemble distinct histories and patterns of damage, and resolves most of them.
Kindness is treated as difficult. Tohru's relentless compassion is examined rather than admired — the series is explicit that it is partly a coping mechanism, and that being the person who absorbs everyone's pain has a cost.
Characteristically shojo: dissolved panel borders, layered figures, tone patterns externalising emotional states. Early volumes are noticeably rougher than later ones, and the visual improvement over the run is marked.
Set against the Pythagorean table, the title totals 43. Reduced, that is 7. The weight sits in “Fruits”, which carries 30 on its own and reduces to 3.
The 7 governs analysis, secrecy, and the search for truth. The reference files it as an open question. It is a lens rather than a verdict, but it is a consistent one: the 7's pull toward the hidden and the unresolved is the pressure under this entry.
Beneath the 7 sit two smaller figures: 9 in the vowels, 7 in the consonants. Reckoning underneath, inquiry on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Counted another way the answer changes. 総画 strokes is 21, a 3, volumes is 23, a 5, years serialised is 9 and debut year is 1998, a 9. The title says 7; the subject says otherwise, and the subject is the harder evidence.
The Inquiry asks one thing of everything on it: sit with the part that was never explained. The 7 mistakes withholding for depth. Some works filed here are obscure because they are unfinished, not because they are deep. The other entries that reduce to 7 are collected on The Inquiry.
