Career
Momoko Sakura was born in 1965 in Shimizu, Shizuoka Prefecture. She made her debut in Ribon in the 1980s, and Chibi Maruko-chan, based on her own childhood, began there in 1986.
The work
Chibi Maruko-chan made her famous, and she wrote the lyrics of the anime's hit theme song. She also became a best-selling essayist, writing about her life with the same dry humour as her manga, and created other series, including Coji-Coji.
The style
Sakura's drawing is simple and round, and her humour comes from close observation of ordinary people, including herself. Her narrators are wry and honest about childish selfishness.
Why she matters
Maruko is one of the most familiar characters in Japan, and Sakura's work is a beloved record of 1970s childhood. She died in 2018.
