よつばと! · Yotsuba to!
A small adopted girl encounters ordinary things — a swing, a bicycle, rain — for the first time, in a comedy about noticing the world. The title reduces to 22 — the edifice.
Created by
22A 22 by its title: master builder (22), and therefore the edifice.
Kiyohiko Azuma's Yotsuba&! began in 2003 and follows Yotsuba, a five-year-old girl living with her adoptive father, as she moves to a new neighbourhood and encounters entirely unremarkable things with complete astonishment.
There is no plot. Chapters concern a cicada, a bicycle, a typhoon, a trip to buy milk.
The premise is a device for restoring attention. Because Yotsuba has no context for anything, ordinary objects and events are presented as genuinely novel, and the reader is invited to look at them properly.
Azuma's comic timing is exceptionally precise. The humour depends almost entirely on panel rhythm — a pause held one beat longer than expected, a reaction placed after the page turn — which makes it a good demonstration of how much comedy in comics is structural rather than verbal.
Deceptively plain and technically excellent. Backgrounds are detailed and consistent, giving the neighbourhood a real geography, and this grounding is what makes Yotsuba's astonishment land. Her expressions are the other achievement — extremely simple linework producing an unusually wide emotional range.
It is not sentimental about childhood, and it does not build toward anything. The adults are competent and unremarkable, the situations are small, and nothing is at stake. Readers wanting narrative momentum should look elsewhere; readers wanting to feel better are well served.
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 22 across 1 word, and it lands on 22 without reducing at all.
Twenty-two is master builder (22) — grand vision made concrete and built to last. The reference files it as an edifice. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 22's drive to turn a huge vision into something concrete.
Heart's Desire 1, Personality 3: initiative underneath, expression on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
The letters give 22; the subject's own figures do not agree. 総画 strokes is 10, a 1 and debut year is 2003, a 5. Where the two part company the reference trusts the figures, because a title is a decision somebody made about the thing, and these are the thing.
The 22 crushes the people who build it. The production histories on this shelf are not happy ones. What the 22 still asks is that you count the years, then count the people. The other entries that reduce to 22 are collected on The Edifice.
