What it is
kakifly's K-On! began in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara in 2007. Its main story ended in 2010, and two follow-up series, about the characters at university and the younger members left at school, ran until 2012. Its title is short for keiongaku, "light music", the Japanese term for pop and rock. Ritsu Tainaka and Mio Akiyama join their high school's light music club to save it from closure, along with the wealthy, kind Tsumugi Kotobuki and Yui Hirasawa, who has never played an instrument.
How it works
The series is a four-panel comedy. Yui buys a guitar, learns to play surprisingly fast and forgets everything else; the club practises a little and spends most of its time over tea and cake in the clubroom. A serious younger student, Azusa Nakano, joins and despairs at their laziness, then comes to love them. Each season brings school festivals, trips and performances.
The mood
There is almost no conflict. The pleasure is in friendship, small jokes and the feeling of a school year passing. When the older members graduate, the series lets them feel the end of something precious.
Why it matters
Its 2009 anime by Kyoto Animation was a phenomenon, and it was widely reported to have boosted sales of the guitars and other instruments its characters play. It became the defining example of the gentle club comedies known as "cute girls doing cute things".
The title by its numbers
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 13 across 1 word, reducing to 4.
What the 4 brings is foundation. The reference files it as a structure. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 4's insistence that what lasts must be built patiently.
Heart's Desire 6, Personality 7: responsibility underneath, inquiry on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
The letters give 4; the subject's own figures do not agree. 総画 strokes is 9, years serialised is 6 and debut year is 2007, a 9. Where the two part company the reference trusts the figures, because a title is a decision somebody made about the thing, and these are the thing.
The 4 asks you to look for the constraint the subject was working inside. The 4 confuses the frame for the work. Structures outlive their usefulness, and several entries here describe conventions kept long past their reason. The other entries that reduce to 4 are collected on The Structure.
