Naoko Takeuchi's Sailor Moon was serialised in the shojo magazine Nakayoshi from 1991 to 1997. Usagi Tsukino, an ordinary and not especially competent schoolgirl, is told by a talking cat that she is a guardian with a duty to protect the world, and gradually assembles a team of others like her.
Magical girl stories predated it, but Sailor Moon combined the genre with the team structure of shonen action series — a squad with complementary abilities, escalating enemies, and sustained combat. That fusion is now so standard that its novelty is easy to miss.
It also placed an ensemble of girls at the centre of a story about power, duty and consequence, with their relationships to each other rather than to a male lead as the emotional core.
Takeuchi's style is distinctive and highly influential — extremely long limbs, elaborate costume detail, and layouts that dissolve panel borders in favour of overlapping figures and decorative tone. It is a strong example of shojo visual language used at scale.
The widely watched anime differs substantially, expanding the story with episodic material and softening several plot points. The manga is faster, darker and considerably more compressed, and several characters' fates differ. As with several classics, the version most people know is not the one Takeuchi drew.
The series has been reissued several times with different volume counts and some revised art, so volume numbering varies by edition.
