Naoko Takeuchi serialised Sailor Moon in the shojo magazine Nakayoshi from 1991 to 1997, developing it from an earlier short work. She trained in the sciences before manga, and is married to Yoshihiro Togashi, the creator of Hunter x Hunter.
Magical girl stories existed well before her, but Takeuchi combined the genre with the team structure of shonen action series — a squad with complementary abilities, escalating antagonists, and sustained combat rather than episodic problem-solving.
That fusion became so standard that its novelty is now easy to miss. Nearly every subsequent magical girl team owes it directly.
She also centred an ensemble of girls in a story about duty and consequence, with their relationships to one another rather than to a male lead carrying the emotional weight.
Her style is highly distinctive and widely imitated — extremely elongated limbs, elaborate costume detail, and layouts that abandon panel borders in favour of overlapping figures and decorative tone. It is one of the clearest large-scale demonstrations of shojo visual language, where composition externalises emotional states rather than depicting sequence.
The widely seen anime differs substantially, expanding with episodic material and softening several plot points. Takeuchi's manga is faster, darker and more compressed, and several characters' fates differ — so the version most people know is not the one she drew.
