What it is

Hitoshi Iwaaki's Parasyte ran in Kodansha's magazines from 1988 to 1995, first in Morning Open Zōkan and then in the monthly Afternoon, and was collected in 10 volumes. Small creatures from nowhere burrow into human beings and replace their heads, becoming shape-shifting predators that eat people. The one that attacks high-school student Shinichi Izumi fails to reach his brain and takes over his right hand instead. It names itself Migi, from the Japanese for "right".

How it works

Shinichi and Migi must cooperate to survive, both against the other parasites, who see them as a threat, and against humans, who would see them as monsters. Migi is coldly logical and entirely without human morality, and their conversations are the heart of the book. As the story continues, Shinichi becomes harder and less emotional, while the parasites, some of them, begin to learn what humans feel.

The horror

Iwaaki's plain, clean drawing makes the transformations more shocking: a face splits open into blades and teeth in an otherwise ordinary room. It is a landmark of body horror, but the violence serves a question the story asks from its first page: if a species is destroying the Earth, which of them is the parasite?

Why it matters

It won the Kodansha Manga Award and is one of the most respected seinen series of its era. It has been adapted as an anime (2014), as two Japanese films and, in 2024, as a Korean series, Parasyte: The Grey. Iwaaki went on to write the historical epic Historie.

The title by its numbers

総画 strokes32 → 5volumes10 → 1years serialised8debut year1988 → 8

The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 33 across 1 word, and it lands on 33 without reducing at all.

What the 33 brings is service. The reference files it as a transmission. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 33's devotion to lifting up everyone it touches.

Heart's Desire 7, Personality 8: inquiry underneath, power on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.

The letters give 33; the subject's own figures do not agree. 総画 strokes is 32, a 5, volumes is 10, a 1, years serialised is 8 and debut year is 1988, an 8. Where the two part company the reference trusts the figures, because a title is a decision somebody made about the thing, and these are the thing.

The 33 asks you to trace who learned from this and what they did with it. The 33 gives itself away entirely. The teachers here are frequently better remembered than read. The other entries that reduce to 33 are collected on The Teaching.
