What it is
Osamu Akimoto's Kochikame, short for a title meaning "This is the police box in front of Kameari Park in Katsushika Ward", ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1976 to 2016. It appeared in every issue for forty years without a single break and was collected in 200 volumes. Kankichi Ryōtsu is a middle-aged police officer in a working-class district of Tokyo: lazy, greedy, loud and brilliant at anything that might make him money.
How it works
Almost every chapter is self-contained. Ryōtsu discovers a new hobby, gadget or business, throws himself into it with absurd energy, makes a fortune and loses it, usually ending in trouble with his chief. Around him are his wealthy and polite colleagues, Reiko and Nakagawa, whose families can buy anything, and a large cast of neighbours.
A record of its time
Because Ryōtsu chased every trend, the series became an accidental chronicle of four decades of Japanese life: video games, model kits, computers, the stock market, mobile phones. Akimoto researched each subject in detail, and readers learned real facts along with the jokes. The downtown setting also preserved a picture of old Tokyo neighbourhoods as they changed.
Why it matters
It is the longest uninterrupted run in Jump's history. When it ended, it held the Guinness record for the most volumes of a single manga series. Its anime ran from 1996 to 2004, and Ryōtsu's statue stands near Kameari Station.
The title by its numbers
Counted letter by letter this title comes to 40 — 4 once reduced.
The reference files it as a structure. The number's contribution is structure, labour, and the building of lasting systems — and with it the 4's insistence that what lasts must be built patiently, which is the thread the reference follows here.
Split the title again and the vowels give a Heart's Desire of 3 (expression) against a Personality of 1 (initiative) in the consonants — expression underneath, initiative on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
総画 strokes is 101, a 2, volumes is 200, a 2, years serialised is 41, a 5 and debut year is 1976, a 5 — none of which lands on the 4 the title gives. That disagreement is worth more than an agreement would be: it marks the gap between what a work is called and what it is.
Read on the 4's terms, this entry asks you to look for the constraint the subject was working inside. The 4 confuses the frame for the work. Structures outlive their usefulness, and several entries here describe conventions kept long past their reason. The other entries that reduce to 4 are collected on The Structure.
