Career
Osamu Akimoto was born in Katsushika, Tokyo, in 1952. In 1976 his story about a rough police officer was published in Weekly Shōnen Jump under a joke pen name parodying the artist Tatsuhiko Yamagami, and it became Kochikame.
The work
Kochikame (1976–2016) appeared in every issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump for forty years and filled 200 volumes. Since ending it, Akimoto has drawn new series and short works and continues to produce occasional Kochikame chapters.
The style
He is known for meticulous research, detailed drawings of machines and city streets, and a disciplined working life: he is said to have kept regular office hours and never missed a deadline.
Why he matters
His record of uninterrupted weekly publication is unmatched in Jump, and Kochikame is a unique record of Tokyo life across four decades.
