3A 3 by its title: creative communicator, and therefore the telling.
What it is
Izumi Matsumoto's Kimagure Orange Road ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1984 to 1987 and was collected in 18 volumes. Kyōsuke Kasuga is an indecisive high-school student whose family has psychic powers that they must keep hidden. After moving to a new town, he meets Madoka Ayukawa, a beautiful, cool girl with a reputation as a delinquent, and falls for her, only for her younger friend Hikaru to fall for him.
How it works
The series is a romantic comedy built on a love triangle. Kyōsuke cannot bring himself to hurt Hikaru or to tell Madoka how he feels, and his attempts to keep everyone happy make things worse. His family's powers, such as teleportation and moving objects, create comic emergencies and allow occasional fantasy episodes.
The mood
Matsumoto drew with soft, stylish art, and the series has a gentle, bittersweet atmosphere of summer, music and adolescence. Madoka, who plays the saxophone and hides her kindness behind a tough front, became one of the most iconic heroines of the 1980s.
Why it matters
It was one of the defining romantic comedies of 1980s shōnen manga, and its anime, from 1987, became a cult favourite abroad. It influenced many later love-triangle stories. Matsumoto's later career was limited by serious health problems.
The title by its numbers
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 93 across 3 words, reducing to 3. The weight sits in “Kimagure”, which carries 40 on its own and reduces to 4.
What the 3 brings is expression. The reference files it as an act of telling. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 3's instinct to turn everything into a story worth telling.
Heart's Desire 1, Personality 11: initiative underneath, vision on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
The letters give 3; the subject's own figures do not agree. 総画 strokes is 31, a 4, volumes is 18, a 9, years serialised is 4 and debut year is 1984, a 22. Where the two part company the reference trusts the figures, because a title is a decision somebody made about the thing, and these are the thing.
The 3 asks you to watch the technique rather than the plot it is carrying. The 3 talks past the point. Where an entry here runs long, it is usually because the technique was more fun to describe than it was important. The other entries that reduce to 3 are collected on The Telling.
