ハチミツとクローバー · Hachimitsu to Kurōbā
Students at a Tokyo art college fall in love with the wrong people and try to work out what to do with their lives. Read from the ledger, as an 8.

8Eight — power. That is the reduction of this title, and the shelf it is read from.
Chica Umino's Honey and Clover ran from 2000 to 2006, first in Shueisha's Young You and, after that magazine closed, in Chorus, and was collected in ten volumes. Yuta Takemoto, an architecture student living in cheap student housing, falls for Hagumi, a tiny, gifted art student, who is drawn instead to the brilliant and erratic Morita. Around them, Yamada loves Mayama, who loves an older woman who cannot let go of her dead husband.
Nobody's love is returned in the order they want. The comedy, with its lively student life, is constant, but the series is really about the end of youth: talent, failure and the realisation that loving someone does not entitle you to anything.
One of its best-known passages has Takemoto, unsure of his future, set off on a bicycle ride north with no destination. It captures the series' central question: what to do when you do not know what you want.
It won the Kodansha Manga Award for shojo in 2003 and was adapted as an anime and live-action film and drama. It established Umino, later the author of March Comes in Like a Lion, as one of the most perceptive writers of young adulthood in manga.
Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 71, which folds down to 8. The weight sits in “Honey”, which carries 31 on its own and reduces to 4.
Eight is visionary & achiever — money, authority, and the machinery of ambition. The reference files it as a reckoning. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 8's concern with power, money, and who is really in charge.
The vowels alone reduce to 5, the consonants to 3. Change underneath, expression on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Counted another way the answer changes. 総画 strokes is 24, a 6, volumes is 10, a 1, years serialised is 7 and debut year is 2000, a 2. The title says 8; the subject says otherwise, and the subject is the harder evidence.
The 8 measures what is countable and calls the rest noise. Several entries record industries that optimised themselves into exhaustion. What the 8 still asks is that you follow the money before you judge the decision. The other entries that reduce to 8 are collected on The Ledger.
