羽海野 チカ
Born 1966
The creator of Honey and Clover and March Comes in Like a Lion, who writes depression and warmth in the same panel. The name reduces to 6 — the care.
6Filed under 6. The Care takes an obligation, and this entry is protects one.
Chica Umino trained in design before entering manga. Honey and Clover (2000–2006), about art students failing to say what they mean, established her and won the Kodansha Manga Award. March Comes in Like a Lion has run in Young Animal since 2007 and is her major work.
Two visual registers in one book. The shogi matches in March are drawn in heavy blacks with water imagery and animal abstraction; the domestic scenes are loose, warm, and interrupted by gag panels. The distance between the two modes is how the protagonist's illness is made legible, and the narrowing of that distance is how his recovery is measured.
Comedy inside clinical material. Umino will place slapstick two pages from a description of suicidal ideation. This is not tonal carelessness — it reflects how the condition actually behaves — but it is the aspect readers most often find difficult.
Unrepayable care. Her characters are frequently supported by people who have no obligation to them and who are struggling themselves. She does not resolve this into reciprocity; the debt stays open.
She consults professional shogi players, and the games in March are real positions. The comic conveys them through faces and exhaustion rather than notation, so no knowledge of the game is required — but the depiction of what a professional career costs is accurate rather than romantic.
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 51 across 2 words, reducing to 6. The weight sits in “Umino”, which carries 27 on its own and reduces to 9.
Six is nurturer & harmonizer — care, community, and the weight of duty. The reference files it as an obligation. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 6's pull toward responsibility, care, and the people involved.
Heart's Desire 1, Personality 5: initiative underneath, change on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
人格 core is 14, a 5, 総格 total is 31, a 4 and born is 1966, a 22 — none of which lands on the 6 the title gives. That disagreement is worth more than an agreement would be: it marks the distance between how a name travels and how it was written.
The 6 smothers. The same instinct that protects a readership produces the paternalism several of these entries document. What the 6 still asks is that you name the people this was answerable to. The other entries that reduce to 6 are collected on The Care.
