Hideaki Sorachi was born in 1979 in Hokkaido. After winning newcomer awards with one-shots, he was given a serialisation in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 2003. Gintama ran there until 2018 and concluded in other Shueisha outlets in 2019.
Sorachi's author comments, title pages and margins are full of jokes about his deadlines, his editor, his popularity and his own drawing. He famously depicted himself as a gorilla. That self-mockery is part of the series itself, which repeatedly breaks the fourth wall to discuss the business of making a weekly manga.
His real skill is switching registers. Gintama can move from a lowbrow parody chapter to a long, sincere arc about grief and loyalty, and Sorachi handles both without letting either undercut the other.
Few Jump authors have been so openly irreverent about the magazine while succeeding in it, and the series' devoted following has made its many endings, each announced and then postponed, a running joke of their own.
