Created by
4A 4 by its title: builder & organizer, and therefore the structure.
What it is
Kazuki Takahashi's Yu-Gi-Oh! ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1996 to 2004 and was collected in 38 volumes. Yugi Mutō is a timid high-school student who loves games. He completes the Millennium Puzzle, an Egyptian artefact, and it awakens a spirit within him: a bold, confident self who challenges wrongdoers to games with terrible penalties.
How it works
At first each chapter featured a different game, from dice to video games. One of them, a card game called Magic & Wizards, later Duel Monsters, proved so popular that the series came to centre on it. Yugi and his friends face the arrogant genius Seto Kaiba and a series of villains in tournaments, and the spirit within Yugi is revealed as a pharaoh whose lost memories lie in ancient Egypt.
The game
Takahashi designed the cards and rules as he went, and the duels became tense battles of strategy and bluff. In 1999 Konami released a real trading card game based on the manga, which became one of the best-selling card games in the world.
Why it matters
It is one of the most successful examples of the media mix, in which a manga, anime, card game and video games feed one another. Its anime and many sequels made it a worldwide phenomenon, and the card game is still played competitively today.
The title by its numbers
Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 40, which folds down to 4.
Four is builder & organizer — structure, labour, and the building of lasting systems. The reference files it as a structure. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 4's insistence that what lasts must be built patiently.
The vowels alone reduce to 9, the consonants to 22. Reckoning underneath, construction on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
総画 strokes is 31, a 4, volumes is 38, an 11, years serialised is 9 and debut year is 1996, a 7. That the 4 turns up in 総画 strokes as well as in the letters is the sort of coincidence this reference collects rather than explains.
The 4 confuses the frame for the work. Structures outlive their usefulness, and several entries here describe conventions kept long past their reason. What the 4 still asks is that you look for the constraint the subject was working inside. The other entries that reduce to 4 are collected on The Structure.
