Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was serialised intermittently from 1982 to 1994 in an animation magazine, produced alongside his film work. It is set long after an industrial civilisation destroyed itself, in a world where a toxic forest is spreading and human nations fight over the habitable remainder.
This matters more here than for most adaptations. The 1984 film covers only the opening portion of the story and reaches a conclusion the manga does not endorse.
The manga continues for a further decade of publication and becomes considerably more difficult: more political, less certain about its protagonist's moral clarity, and ultimately arriving at conclusions about ecology, purity and engineered salvation that are genuinely uncomfortable. Readers who know only the film have not encountered the work.
Dense, small-panelled and heavily hatched, with very little tonal shorthand. It is demanding to read — pages carry a great deal of information and the war sequences in particular require attention to follow. This is not a work that can be skimmed.
