5Title sums to 41 and reduces to 5 — The Turn, where the reference files a turn.
What it is
Kōta Hirano's Hellsing ran in Shōnen Gahōsha's Young King OURs from 1997 to 2008 and was collected in 10 volumes. The Hellsing Organisation, led by Sir Integra Hellsing, protects Britain from vampires and other supernatural threats. Its greatest weapon is Alucard, a vampire of terrifying power bound to serve the Hellsing family. In the first chapter he turns a young police officer, Seras Victoria, into a vampire, and she becomes his reluctant apprentice.
How it works
The early chapters are monster-hunting episodes, but the series soon becomes a three-way war between Hellsing, the Vatican's fanatical Section XIII Iscariot, led by the priest Alexander Anderson, and Millennium, a battalion of surviving Nazi soldiers turned into artificial vampires, who invade London. The war is drawn at enormous scale and with extreme violence.
The style
Hirano draws in heavy blacks, sharp angles and exaggerated, grinning faces, and his pages are full of speeches, poses and dramatic close-ups. The tone is over the top on purpose, mixing horror, action and grim comedy. Under it is a question about what it means to be human, which Alucard asks of every opponent.
Why it matters
It is a cult classic of seinen action and one of the best-known vampire manga. Its anime adaptations, especially the faithful Hellsing Ultimate (2006–2012), made it famous worldwide. Hirano's next series, Drifters, began in 2009.
The title by its numbers
Set against the Pythagorean table, the title totals 41. Reduced, that is 5.
The reference files it as a turn. The number's contribution is freedom, disruption, and restless movement — and with it the 5's restlessness and hunger for change, which is the thread the reference follows here.
Beneath the 5 sit two smaller figures: 5 in the vowels, 9 in the consonants. The presentation folds back into the want: reckoning in service of change.
The letters give 5; the subject's own figures do not agree. Volumes is 10, a 1, years serialised is 12, a 3 and debut year is 1997, an 8. Where the two part company the reference trusts the figures, because a title is a decision somebody made about the thing, and these are the thing.
Read on the 5's terms, this entry asks you to ask what was abandoned, and whether it deserved to be. The 5 moves for the sake of moving. Not every break documented here led anywhere, and the reference says so where it did not. The other entries that reduce to 5 are collected on The Turn.
