Satoru Noda's Golden Kamuy ran in Weekly Young Jump from 2014 to 2022 and was collected in 31 volumes. Saichi Sugimoto, a veteran of the Russo-Japanese War known as "Immortal Sugimoto", hears of a fortune in gold stolen from the Ainu. The map to it was tattooed on the bodies of escaped convicts, and he sets out to find it with Asirpa, an Ainu girl whose father is tied to the gold.
The series mixes registers freely. A chapter can move from a brutal fight to a detailed account of how to hunt and cook a squirrel to a piece of broad comedy. The cast of rivals, from a renegade army unit to an aged Hijikata Toshizō, gives the treasure hunt the structure of a battle royale.
What set it apart was its portrayal of Ainu culture: language, food, hunting, religious practice and clothing, drawn with care and supervised by the Ainu-language scholar Hiroshi Nakagawa. Asirpa is the series' moral and practical centre rather than a guide for the hero, and for many readers it was a first sustained encounter with Ainu life.
It won the Manga Taishō in 2016 and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize Grand Prize in 2018, and Asirpa was the face of the British Museum's 2019 manga exhibition.
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 47 across 2 words, reducing to 11. The weight sits in “Golden”, which carries 30 on its own and reduces to 3.
What the 11 brings is vision. The reference files it as a signal received early. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 11's heightened, high-voltage intuition about what comes next.
Heart's Desire 6, Personality 5: responsibility underneath, change on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Counted another way the answer changes. 総画 strokes is 20, a 2, volumes is 31, a 4, years serialised is 9 and debut year is 2014, a 7. The title says 11; the subject says otherwise, and the subject is the harder evidence.
The 11 asks you to remember that nobody noticed this at the time. The 11 is unstable and knows it. Being early and being wrong are indistinguishable until later. The other entries that reduce to 11 are collected on The Signal.
