What it is

Koyoharu Gotouge's Demon Slayer ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 2016 to 2020 and finished in 23 volumes. Tanjiro Kamado returns from selling charcoal to find his family slaughtered and his sister Nezuko transformed into a demon that has, unusually, kept some part of herself. He trains as a demon slayer to find a cure.

Why it is short

The most interesting structural fact about Demon Slayer is that it ended. It concluded at 23 volumes while it was the best-selling manga in Japan, at a point when almost any other series would have been extended. The plot is built to close: a fixed antagonist named in the first volume, a finite roster of named demons, and an escalation that arrives somewhere.

The 2019 anime adaptation by ufotable is what turned the series into a commercial phenomenon, and it smoothed exactly the qualities that made the manga divisive.

Almost every demon gets a flashback at the moment of death explaining how they became one, and the series is insistent that these are not excuses. Tanjiro's characteristic gesture is pity for something he has just killed. That combination — kill the monster, mourn the person — is the emotional engine, and it repeats often enough that some readers find it formulaic and others find it the point.

The reservation

The final arc is compressed, and several late-introduced characters get less room than the structure needs. Nezuko is also more device than character for long stretches, which is the most common serious criticism of the series.
