Death Note, written by Tsugumi Ohba and drawn by Takeshi Obata, ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2003 to 2006. Light Yagami, an academically brilliant and deeply arrogant student, acquires a supernatural notebook that kills whoever is named in it, and sets about eliminating criminals to build what he considers a better world.
It is a shonen series with almost no physical action. The conflict is entirely deductive — two extremely intelligent people attempting to identify and trap each other under constraints, with the reader given enough information to follow the reasoning.
This makes it an unusually clear demonstration that the demographic label describes a magazine rather than a genre.
The notebook's rules are specified precisely and expanded carefully, and nearly every major turn depends on a rule established earlier. This is the clearest available example of why a constrained system produces better tension than an open-ended one: the reader can anticipate, and a clever application of a known rule is satisfying because it was available to work out.
The first half is near-universally admired. The second half, following a significant shift in the cast, is considerably more divisive, and a common recommendation is to be aware that the series changes character partway through.
Obata's art is a substantial part of the appeal, extracting enormous tension from scenes consisting largely of people thinking.
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 38 across 2 words, reducing to 11. The weight sits in “Death”, which carries 20 on its own and reduces to 2.
What the 11 brings is vision. The reference files it as a signal received early. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 11's heightened, high-voltage intuition about what comes next.
