ブラック・ジャック
An unlicensed surgeon of impossible skill takes outrageous fees and impossible cases, in short medical stories about what a life is worth. The title reduces to 9 — the closing.

Black Jack ran in Akita Shoten's Weekly Shōnen Champion from 1973 to 1983 and was collected in 25 volumes. Its hero is a scarred surgeon who works without a licence, charges enormous sums and performs operations no one else would attempt. Each chapter is a complete story: a patient, a crisis, an operation and a moral.
The format suited Tezuka, who had trained and qualified as a physician before committing to manga. The medicine is often fanciful, but the dilemmas are real ones: who gets treated, who pays, when to stop. Black Jack's mercenary pose is usually a front, and many chapters end with him waiving the fee or exposing someone whose motives were worse than his.
It arrived when Tezuka's career was widely thought to be in decline, and its success restored his standing. It also established the medical drama as a manga genre and showed that an anthology of self-contained stories could sustain a weekly series for a decade.
His assistant, Pinoko, a girl assembled by Black Jack from tissue removed from her twin's body, is one of Tezuka's strangest inventions: played for comedy, but rooted in the series' constant question of what counts as a person.
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 18 across 2 words, reducing to 9. The weight sits in “Black”, which carries 11 on its own and reduces to 11.
What the 9 brings is reckoning. The reference files it as a completion. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 9's sense of a cycle closing and something being released.
Heart's Desire 2, Personality 7: cooperation underneath, inquiry on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Counted another way the answer changes. 総画 strokes is 22, volumes is 25, a 7, years serialised is 11 and debut year is 1973, a 2. The title says 9; the subject says otherwise, and the subject is the harder evidence.
The 9 asks you to work out what survived the ending. The 9 sentimentalises. An ending is not automatically a meaning, and the reference tries not to pretend otherwise. The other entries that reduce to 9 are collected on The Closing.
