What it is

Hajime Isayama's Attack on Titan ran from 2009 to 2021. The remnants of humanity live inside concentric walls, besieged by giant humanoid Titans that eat people for no discernible reason. When the outer wall is breached, Eren Yeager joins the military to fight them.

What it actually turns into

The premise is a survival horror setup, and the series systematically dismantles it. The Titans have an origin, the walls have a history, and the political situation outside them reframes everything established earlier.

By its later arcs the series is about ethnic persecution, militarism, cycles of retaliatory violence, and whether an oppressed people can commit atrocities of their own. The horror premise turns out to have been scaffolding.

Craft

Isayama's art was widely criticised early as rough, and it improved substantially across the run. What was strong from the start was his sense of scale and of bodily vulnerability — the Titans are frightening because of how casually they handle human bodies, not because of how they are rendered.

His plotting is genuinely tight, with early details reframed rather than retconned.

The ending

The conclusion is among the most contested in modern manga, and opinion remains sharply divided. This is worth knowing going in, since the disagreement is substantive rather than a matter of taste about a final page.

Content

Sustained graphic violence and a bleak register throughout. It is not a series that becomes lighter as it proceeds.
