漆原 友紀
The author of Mushishi, whose quiet supernatural stories are rooted in the landscapes of rural Japan. The name reduces to 4 — the structure.
4Four — foundation. That is the reduction of this name, and the shelf it is read from.
Yuki Urushibara came to attention through Kodansha's Afternoon, where the first Mushishi stories appeared in a seasonal special issue in 1999. The series moved to the monthly magazine in 2002 and ran until 2008.
Mushishi follows Ginko, a travelling specialist in mushi, simple life forms that most people cannot see. Its self-contained chapters are less about the supernatural than about how people live with forces they do not understand.
Urushibara's landscapes carry much of the storytelling: mountains in mist, rivers, snow, the light in a forest. Her drawing is restrained and her pacing slow, and she favours endings that are uncertain or sad over neat resolutions.
Mushishi won the general category of the Kodansha Manga Award and an Excellence Prize at the Japan Media Arts Festival in 2003. She later returned to Ginko's world in a special volume after the series ended.
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 67 across 2 words, reducing to 4. The weight sits in “Urushibara”, which carries 46 on its own and reduces to 1.
Four is builder & organizer — structure, labour, and the building of lasting systems. The reference files it as a structure. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 4's insistence that what lasts must be built patiently.
Heart's Desire 11, Personality 11: the subject wants exactly what it appears to want, which is vision — an unusually undivided reading.
人格 core is 14, a 5 and 総格 total is 37, a 1 — none of which lands on the 4 the title gives. That disagreement is worth more than an agreement would be: it marks the distance between how a name travels and how it was written.
The 4 confuses the frame for the work. Structures outlive their usefulness, and several entries here describe conventions kept long past their reason. What the 4 still asks is that you look for the constraint the subject was working inside. The other entries that reduce to 4 are collected on The Structure.
