Career
Yōichi Takahashi was born in Tokyo in 1960. He was captivated by football after watching the 1978 World Cup, at a time when the sport had little following in Japan. A one-shot story about a young footballer appeared in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1980, and Captain Tsubasa began serialisation the following year.
The work
Captain Tsubasa (1981–1988) became one of Jump's great hits, and Takahashi spent most of his career continuing it, following Tsubasa and his rivals through youth tournaments, professional clubs abroad and the Olympics in a long line of sequels. He has also drawn other sports manga.
The style
His matches are built around emotion and spectacle rather than tactics: special shots, slow-motion saves and long struggles across many chapters. The characters' faces, with their large eyes and strong outlines, became instantly recognisable worldwide.
Recognition
He is credited with making football popular in Japan before the professional J.League began in 1993, and many international players have spoken of the series' influence. He has been involved with a football club in his home district of Katsushika, Tokyo, named Nankatsu after the team in the manga.
