Tōru Fujisawa
11The Signal · 47藤沢 とおる
Born 1967
The creator of Great Teacher Onizuka, who turned the delinquent manga into a story about teaching.
11Eleven — vision. That is the reduction of this name, and the shelf it is read from.
Career
Tōru Fujisawa was born in 1967. He made his name in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine with Shonan Junai Gumi (1990–1996), about two delinquent friends, Onizuka and Danma, in the Shōnan area.
The work
Its sequel, Great Teacher Onizuka (1997–2002), made Onizuka a teacher and became Fujisawa's biggest success. He has returned to the character several times since, in series such as GTO: Shonan 14 Days and GTO: Paradise Lost.
The style
Fujisawa mixes broad, crude comedy with serious stories about young people in trouble. His heroes are rough and rule-breaking, but loyal and fundamentally kind.
Why he matters
His work is the best-known example of the delinquent manga, and GTO's idea of the teacher who cares more than the system has been imitated widely.
The name by its numbers
Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 47, which folds down to 11. The weight sits in “Fujisawa”, which carries 27 on its own and reduces to 9.
What the 11 brings is vision. The reference files it as a signal received early. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 11's heightened, high-voltage intuition about what comes next.
The vowels alone reduce to 5, the consonants to 6. Change underneath, responsibility on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
The letters give 11; the subject's own figures do not agree. 人格 core is 9, 総格 total is 31, a 4 and born is 1967, a 5. Where the two part company the reference trusts the figures, because the romanisation is a convenience for readers abroad, while the strokes are what the pen name was actually built from.
The 11 asks you to remember that nobody noticed this at the time. The 11 is unstable and knows it. Being early and being wrong are indistinguishable until later. The other entries that reduce to 11 are collected on The Signal.
