井上 雄彦
Born 1967
The creator of Slam Dunk and Vagabond, and one of the few artists to move convincingly from clean commercial linework to brush-led painting. The name reduces to 9 — the closing.
9Filed under 9. The Closing takes a completion, and this entry is hands on one.
Takehiko Inoue worked as an assistant before Slam Dunk ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1990 to 1996, a series widely credited with substantially increasing basketball's popularity in Japan. He followed it with Vagabond, a historical drama about the swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, and Real, about wheelchair basketball.
Inoue is unusual for having two distinct and equally accomplished modes. His shonen work is clean, kinetic and precise, with legible court geometry and readable athletic motion. His later historical work moves substantially toward brush and ink, producing pages closer to traditional painting than to conventional manga rendering.
The shift is not decorative. Looser rendering accompanies a story less interested in technique and more interested in what a life organised around violence costs.
His consistent preoccupation is physical bodies — how they move, what they can do, how they fail. This runs through athletic performance, swordsmanship, and disability, and it is drawn with an attention to anatomy under strain that very few artists match.
Inoue's sports work is the standard against which the genre is measured, largely because the sport is depicted accurately enough to be followed as sport. The reader learns the game alongside a novice protagonist, which makes technical explanation feel earned rather than intrusive.
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 63 across 2 words, reducing to 9. The weight sits in “Takehiko”, which carries 35 on its own and reduces to 8.
What the 9 brings is reckoning. The reference files it as a completion. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 9's sense of a cycle closing and something being released.
Heart's Desire 8, Personality 1: power underneath, initiative on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
The letters give 9; the subject's own figures do not agree. 人格 core is 15, a 6, 総格 total is 28, a 1 and born is 1967, a 5. Where the two part company the reference trusts the figures, because the romanisation is a convenience for readers abroad, while the strokes are what the pen name was actually built from.
The 9 asks you to work out what survived the ending. The 9 sentimentalises. An ending is not automatically a meaning, and the reference tries not to pretend otherwise. The other entries that reduce to 9 are collected on The Closing.
