Takako Shimura

4The Structure · 49

志村 貴子

Born 1973

The creator of Wandering Son and Sweet Blue Flowers, whose quiet stories explore gender and love.

4A 4 by its name: builder & organizer, and therefore the structure.

Career

Takako Shimura was born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1973. She made her debut in the 1990s and drew for several magazines before her major series.

The work

Wandering Son (2002–2013) is her best-known work. Sweet Blue Flowers (2004–2013), a yuri romance about two girls who reunite in high school, is also widely admired, and she later drew Even Though We're Adults, about two women in love.

The style

Shimura's art is soft and delicate, and her storytelling is quiet and observant. She writes about gender, identity and same-sex love with honesty and without melodrama.

Why she matters

Her work is among the most respected in manga for its treatment of transgender and queer characters, and it has found a devoted readership abroad.

The name by its numbers

Takako14Shimura35total49 → 4
人格 core19 → 1総格 total29 → 11born1973 → 2

The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 49 across 2 words, reducing to 4. The weight sits in “Shimura”, which carries 35 on its own and reduces to 8.

What the 4 brings is foundation. The reference files it as a structure. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 4's insistence that what lasts must be built patiently.

Heart's Desire 3, Personality 1: expression underneath, initiative on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.

Counted another way the answer changes. 人格 core is 19, a 1, 総格 total is 29, an 11 and born is 1973, a 2. The title says 4; the subject says otherwise, and the subject is the harder evidence.

The 4 asks you to look for the constraint the subject was working inside. The 4 confuses the frame for the work. Structures outlive their usefulness, and several entries here describe conventions kept long past their reason. The other entries that reduce to 4 are collected on The Structure.
