Sui Ishida

9The Closing · 45

石田 スイ

Born 1986

The creator of Tokyo Ghoul, known for unsettling, increasingly experimental art.

9Name sums to 45 and reduces to 9 — The Closing, where the reference files a completion.

Career

Sui Ishida was born in 1986. A one-shot version of Tokyo Ghoul won a prize in Shueisha's Young Jump, and the series began there in 2011.

The work

Tokyo Ghoul (2011–2014) and its sequel Tokyo Ghoul:re (2014–2018) made Ishida a star. Ishida later wrote Choujin X, a story about people who gain strange powers.

The style

Ishida's art moves between clean character work and loose, painterly, almost abstract pages. Colour illustrations are a particular strength, and the art often shows a character's mind breaking down.

Why Ishida matters

Tokyo Ghoul was one of the defining seinen hits of the 2010s, and Ishida's style influenced a generation of dark-fantasy artists.

The name by its numbers

Sui13Ishida32total45 → 9
人格 core7総格 total14 → 5born1986 → 6

Counted letter by letter this name comes to 45 — 9 once reduced. The weight sits in “Ishida”, which carries 32 on its own and reduces to 5.

The 9 governs endings, compassion, and the closing of cycles. The reference files it as a completion. It is a lens rather than a verdict, but it is a consistent one: the 9's sense of a cycle closing and something being released is the pressure under this entry.

Split the name again and the vowels give a Heart's Desire of 4 (foundation) against a Personality of 5 (change) in the consonants — foundation underneath, change on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.

Counted another way the answer changes. 人格 core is 7, 総格 total is 14, a 5 and born is 1986, a 6. The title says 9; the subject says otherwise, and the subject is the harder evidence.

The Closing asks one thing of everything on it: work out what survived the ending. The 9 sentimentalises. An ending is not automatically a meaning, and the reference tries not to pretend otherwise. The other entries that reduce to 9 are collected on The Closing.
